1952년생. 서울대학교를 졸업하고 비엔나 공과대학에서 수학했고, 15년간의 김수근문하를 거쳐 1989년 이로재(履露齋)를 개설하여 현재 대표로 있다.
그는 한국 건축계에 신선한 바람을 일으킨 “4.3그룹”의 일원이었으며, 새로운 건축교육을 모색하고자 “서울건축학교”를 설립하는데 참가했다.
1998년 북 런던대학의 객원교수를 역임하고 서울대학교에 출강했으며, 2008년 한국예술종합학교 객원교수, 2017년 비엔나공과대학 건축학부 객원교수,
2019년 북경중앙미술학원 초빙교수를 거쳐 지금은 동아대학교 석좌교수로 있다.
또한, 2008년 베니스비엔날레 한국관 커미셔너, 2011년 광주디자인비엔날레의 총감독으로 활약한 후, 2014년 서울시 초대총괄건축가,
2018년 국가건축정책위원장으로 선임되어 2020년을 끝으로 공공영역에서의 오랜 직무를 마쳤다.
저서로는 ‘빈자의 미학(1996 미건사)’과, ‘건축, 사유의 기호(2004 돌베개)’, ‘지문(2009 열화당)’, ‘오래된 것들은 다 아름답다(2012 컬쳐그라퍼)’,
‘보이지 않는 건축, 움직이는 도시(2016 돌베개)’, ‘묵상(2019 돌베개)’, ‘Natured(2020 Actar)’ 등이 있다.
20세기를 주도한 서구 문명에 대한 비판에서 출발한 ‘빈자의 미학’이라는 주제를 1992년 발표하며 줄곧 이를 건축의 중심에 두고 작업하면서,
“김수근문화상”, “한국건축문화대상”, “대한민국예술문화상” 등 여러 상을 받은 그에게, 2002년 미국건축가협회는 Honorary Fellowship을 수여하였으며,
건축가로는 최초로, 국립현대미술관에서 주관하는 ‘2002 올해의 작가’로 선정되어 ‘건축가 승효상전’을 개최한 바 있다.
2019년 아시아인으로서는 최초로 오스트리아 “학술예술 1급 십자훈장”을 수여 받았으며, 2020년 대한민국 정부는 그의 오랜 문화적 공적을 기려 “은관문화훈장”을 수여하였다.



Born in 1952, graduated Seoul National University and studied at Technische Universitaet in Wien. Worked for Kim Swoo Geun from 1974 to 1989 and established his office
“IROJE architects and planners’ in 1989.
He was a core member of “4.3 Group” which strongly influenced Korean architectural society, and participated in founding “Seoul School of Architecture” for a new educational system. He taught at North London
University(1998-1997), at Seoul National University(2003-2005), at Korea National University of Arts(2007-2009), at TU Vienna(2017-2018) and at CAFA in Beijing(2019-2020). He is now a chair professor of Donga
University since 2018.
He was the director for Gwangju Design Biennale in 2011 and for Korean Pavilion of Venice Biennale in 2008. He became the first City Architect of the Seoul Metropolitan Government in 2016 and then became the
Chief Commissioner of Presidential Commission on Architecture Policy of Korea in 2020.
He is the author of ‘Beauty of Poverty(1996 Mikunsa)’, ‘Architecture, Signs of Thoughts(2004 Dolbegae)’, ‘Landscript(2009 Yoelhwadang)’, ‘All Oldies are Beautiful(2012 Culturegraph)’, ‘Invisible
Architecture, Inconstant Cities(2016 Dolbegae)’, ‘Contemplation(2019 Dolbegae)’ and ‘Natured(2020 Actar)’.
His works are based on his own critical concerns on Western culture of the 20th century whose subject is ‘beauty of poverty’. He won various prizes with his practice and works. The America Institute of
Architects invested him with Honorary Fellow of AIA in 2002, and Korea National Museum of Contemporary of Art selected him as ‘the artist of year 2002’, first time for an architect and had a solo exhibition. In
2019 the Austrian Government awarded him “the Cross of Honour for Science and Art, First Class”. Korean government who honored him with ‘Korea Award for Art and Culture’ in 2007, again invested him with
“Order for Culture Merits, Eun-gwan” in 2020.
