Time fo/r/est

Time fo/r/est
In the late autumn of 2017, the artist visited Saryeoni Forest in Jeju Island.
The time away from the city center and surrounded by nature made his mind and body relax.
The forest was home to cedars that were artificially planted in the 1930s.
Although it is a forest that was created by humans,
he found it impressive how the trees grew densely or sparsely and in harmony while adapting to the environment for about 90 years.
The skin that protects the insides of an animal records and stores countless experiences in life.
When this skin is processed with a material obtained from plants called “tannin,” it becomes vegetable tanned leather.
This leather still retains the properties of the skin and reveals the records of its life. From the artist’s point of view,
however, visible surface is not the only thing that matters in leather.
Attention needs to be paid not only to the physical properties of thickness, color, and touch, but also to the significance of the material, such as life and death.
The exhibition presents about 20 works under the theme of
“Time, Forest, and Rest.” It brings together completed objects accumulated over a long period of time to create a forest.
All the senses—sight, touch, and smell—felt in the forest are expressed using a single medium: leather.
Although dismantled from its original state, leather is revived from a small dot.
Here, long and short lines are repeatedly added to develop the leather into objects.
These objects lie on the borderline; leather comes from the animal kingdom, but the production method and resulting objects are conversely reminiscent of the plant kingdom.
Sections are combined by stacking tough and soft materials.
The artist says this new aspect reminds him of a tree seed that grows larger and larger every year.
The objects exists in balance on the borderline between animals that move and record traces of time and plants that take root in one place and grow life.
From the processing of leather to the completion of the objects, animals and plants maintain a close relationship with each other.
The works are completed with minimal tools and intuitive actions, but they blend with each other to create unique results through free variation.

The works draw attention to the materiality and symbolism of vegetable tanned leather.
Leather of different colors, thicknesses, and lengths are cut into thin lines and piled up, one by one, to create one-of-a-kind objects.
A simple hand tool completes the works slowly and quietly like the symbiotic plants around us.
