작가소개

배세화 작가는 국내에서 작업하는 가구 디자이너이다.
2010년 디자인 마이애미와 바젤 아트 페어에서 국제적으로 이름을 알리기 시작했고,
그 후 런던의 Haunch of Venison에서의 첫 개인전을 시작으로 꾸준히 국내외 페어와 전시를 참여하고 있다.
배세화 작가는 홍익대학교 목조형가구학과를 졸업 한 후 한국적인 형태와 장인정신이 곁들여진 작업으로 잘 알려진
‘스팀 밴딩 시리즈’를 지속적으로 발전시켜 나갔다.
스팀 밴딩 시리즈들은 1년에 4작품 정도 밖에 만들어지지 않을 정도로 많은 시간과 정성이 녹아있는 것으로 알려져있다.



Sehwa Bae is a furniture designer based in Paju, South Korea.
He debuted internationally at Design Miami and Basel Fair in 2010. Since his first extensive solo presentation
at Haunch of Venison in London, 2011, Sehwa continuously creates visionary works and presents them at international art fairs
and exhibitions. Sehwa developed his ‘Steam Bent series’, well known for its context of Korean aesthetic and craftsmanship after
graduate at woodworking & furniture design of Hongik University in Seoul. With his time honored techniques and sincerity he produces
between three and five pieces every year.



작품설명

매우 정교한 작업 중 하나인 ‘Meditation’은 한국의 전통적인 미에서 시작이 되었다.
배세화 작가는 자연 그대로의 모습을 거스르지 않는것이 가장 중요한 한국 전통의 미라고 생각한다.
자연에서 배울 수 있는 전통적인 심미성을 통해 절제와 비움의 미학 그리고 채움의 미학을 작품으로 구현했다.
‘Meditation’은 나무를 주 재료로 사용하여 만든 가구이면서도 명상의 대상이 되기도 한다. 작가가 자연 그대로의 요소를 가장 강조한 것이다.
이 작품은 곧은 직선이 아주 섬세한 스팀 벤딩 작업을 통해 최대한 절제된 곡선으로 나타나게 되는데 좌우 대칭의 단순함을 보여준다.
배세화 작가의 작업 철학은 자연과의 조화로움이 주는 고요함과 평온함을 찾는 것이다.



In one of his exquisite steam works ‘Meditation’, Sehwa Bae evokes a traditional aesthetic of Korea.
Not disturbing the view of nature itself is the most important value of aesthetic appreciation in Korean traditions.
Based on this aesthetics, his works weave in the sense of moderation, emptiness and fullness. Utilizing wood as primary
material, ‘Meditation’ rises as an object and becomes a medium of meditation.
He emphasises the matter itself as an elements of nature. Sehwa begins his works with geometric diagrams
to which he adds moderated curves through a meticulous steam bending process, and intended the simplicity of symmetry.
His working philosophy is to derive a balance in nature with a sense of calm and serenity.
